Anomalous Verbs — Present Indicative (bēon, willan, dōn, gān)
Historical Grammar
CHAPTER XXII.
REMAINING VERBS; VERB-PHRASES WITH habban, bēon, AND weorðan.
Anomalous Verbs. (See § 19.)
These are:
bēon (wesan), wæs, wǣron, —, to be.
willan, wolde, woldon, —, to will, intend.
dōn, dyde, dydon, gedōn, to do, cause.
gān, ēode, ēodon, gegān, to go.
NOTE.—In the original Indo-Germanic language, the first person of the present indicative singular ended in (1) ō or (2) mi. Cf. Gk. Λύ-ω, εί-µί, Lat. am-ō, su-m. The Strong and Weak Conjugations of O.E. are survivals of the ō-class. The four Anomalous Verbs mentioned above are the sole remains in O.E. of the mi-class. Note the surviving m in eom I am, and dōm I do (Northumbrian form). These mi-verbs are sometimes called non-Thematic to distinguish them from the Thematic or ō-verbs.
Conjugation of Anomalous Verbs.
Only the present indicative and subjunctive are at all irregular:
Indicative.

Syntax & Usage — Wülfing
Loquentes translation from Wülfing. Wülfing wrote in German; the English below is a Loquentes translation. The Old English examples are Wülfing’s own and are reproduced exactly as printed. The cleaned German original follows in the collapsible block.
A. wesan, bēon.
381. 1. wesan, bēon as a notional verb. wesan, bēon appears as a notional verb in the most varied meanings; it denotes: a. existence, being present; b. being situated; c. remaining, staying; d. happening; e. taking place; f. going, being on the way; g. coming.
Wülfing's glosses on individual examples are kept where they carry his reading: at Or. 88, 10 he glosses the construction "(= ein volles Jahr darnach geschah es)", "a full year later it happened"; at Or. 606, 44 he explains "hier heißt es: da war es zwei Jahre her, daß …", "here it means: it was two years ago that …".
382. 2. wesan, bēon as an auxiliary verb. a. α. As an auxiliary, wesan, bēon serves to connect the predicate noun with the subject; the examples Wülfing reserves for the section on the predicate noun (second Hauptteil, I. Abschnitt, IV. Abteilung). β. The predicate may also be expressed by a combination with a preposition, as at Cp. 56, 20. b. As an auxiliary, wesan, bēon further appears with an infinitive joined by to, where it denotes the necessity or the futurity of the action; those examples he gives with the infinitive (see § 499).
On the combination of wesan, bēon with the genitive, dative and instrumental Wülfing refers to §§ 23, 24 (I. S. 30 ff.), 77 (I. S. 107 ff.), 80, 81, 83. a, 84. a (I. S. 133 ff.), 124. 7 and the note (I. S. 271).
