Conditional, Concessive and Consecutive Clauses

Syntax & Usage — Wülfing

Loquentes translation and abridgement from Wülfing. Repetitive example catalogues are condensed; Wülfing’s conceptual discussion is retained. The full cleaned German extract appears below in the collapsible block.

G. Conditional Clauses (Clauses of Condition). Wülfing classifies conditional clauses according to their introductory conjunctions and the modal relationships between the protasis (condition) and apodosis (consequence).

448. 1. gif with the Indicative. The indicative appears in conditional clauses when the condition is stated as an open, real, or recurrent fact in the present or past, without implying doubt (e.g. general truths or natural consequences: gif mon hine on fyr deþ, ðonne fleoþ ðær næddran onweg).

449. 2. gif with the Subjunctive. The subjunctive is the regular construction: α. when the conditional period forms part of indirect speech; β. when the governing clause contains an imperative, wish, or expression of purpose; γ. in unreal or hypothetical conditions (counterfactual periods), where both the condition and the main clause contain suppositions contrary to reality; δ. in various individual nuances of contingency.

450. 3. buton ("unless, except"). Naturally buton does not take the indicative; with the subjunctive it introduces negative conditions ("unless, except that").

451. 4. ðe and þær in conditional sense. The relative particle ðe, and particularly þær ("where" > "if"), frequently serve as conditional conjunctions with the subjunctive.

452. 5. nemne (nefne). Meaning "unless, except", this archaic and poetic particle occurs several times in Alfredian prose with the subjunctive.

453. 6. Inversion without conjunction. A conditional clause may be expressed without any conjunction by placing the finite verb at the head of the clause (e.g. wære he auðer...).

454. 7. Compound and correlative conditional formulas. These include buton gif ("unless"), an ðæt ("on the single condition that"), and related connective phrases.

H. Concessive Clauses (Clauses of Concession).

455. 1. þēah and þēah þe with the Subjunctive. The subjunctive is the standard mood with þēah / þēah þe ("although, even if"), marking the conceded circumstance as a supposition or granted premise.

456. 2. þēah with the Indicative. In exceptional instances where the conceded fact is emphasized as an undeniable historical reality, the indicative appears.

457. 3. Generalizing and Alternative Concessives. Indefinite pronouns and correlatives like swa hwelc swa ("whichever") or sam ... sam ("whether ... or") take the subjunctive to denote universal concession.

J. Consecutive Clauses (Clauses of Result).

458–460. Consecutive clauses denote the consequence or result of the action in the main clause, typically introduced by þæt or swa þæt. When the consequence is presented as an actual, realized fact, the indicative stands (§ 459); when the result is presented as intended, potential, or governed by a negative or interrogative main clause, the subjunctive stands (§ 460).

461–462. Modal auxiliaries in result clauses and elliptical constructions. Periphrastic constructions with sculan and magan frequently reinforce the potential or necessary character of the result.

G. Nebensätze zur Angabe der Bedingung.

Litteratur:

F. J. Mather jr., The Conditional Sentence in Anglo-Saxon. Baltimorer Doktorschrift. München 1893. — Besprochen von Wülfing in den Engl. Stud. XIX 406 ff.

Ich teile hier nach den verschiedenen Fügewörtern ein:

1. gif.

448. a. Mit dem Indikativ: Be. 473, 24 gif mon hine (þone stan gagates) on fyr deþ, ðonne fleoþ ðær næddran onweg (= ardens igni admotus, incensus serpentes fugat); […]

449. b. Mit dem Konjunktiv.

α. Wenn der Bedingungssatz zu indirekter Rede gehört: Be. 486, 8 he bæd þæt he hi gescylde & þæt he . . . . . ., forðon he gearo wære on ðam ylcan gewinne mid him beon, gif him lefnys seald wære; […]

β. Der übergeordnete Satz enthält einen Wunsch oder eine Absicht.

aa. Der übergeordnete Satz enthält einen Imperativ: Be. 477, 28 ac gif ðu wylle gehyran þæt soð minre æfestnysse, ðonne wite ðu me Cristene beon (= si . . desideras, . . cognosce); […]

bb. Der übergeordnete Satz ist ein von ðæt eingeleiteter Wunsch-satz: Be. 472, 31 ic . . . bidde, gif he hwæt ymbe ðis on oðre wisan gemete oþþe gehyre, þæt he me þæt ne otwite (= si . . . . repererit, non . . . imputet); […]

cc. Der Wunsch ist durch beon und den Infinitiv mit to ausgedrückt: Be. 491, 34 gif hwylce ðonne ofer þæt gefremman, ðonne syndon hi to bescyriganne (= si . . . perpetraverint, . . . privandi sunt); […]

γ. Der Bedingungssatz sowohl wie der übergeordnete Satz enthalten nur Angenommenes oder der Wirklichkeit nicht Entsprechendes: Be. 549, 9 forðon gif ðu ðisses mannes fea in his synnum deaðes ne onfenge, ne burne his wite on ðe (= si . . . accepisses, . . . arderet). […]

δ. Einzelheiten: Be. 471, 17 gif se oþer nolde, hu wurþ he elles gelæred: […]

450. 2. buton.

a. Mit dem Indikativ kommt buton naturgemäſs nicht vor.

b. Mit dem Konjunktiv: Or. 48, 29 hie nellað geþencean oþþe ne cunnon, hwær hit gewurde ær þæm cristendome, þæt ænegu þeod oþre hiere willum friþes bæde, buton hiere þearf wære; […]

Anmerkung: Das zusammengesetzte Fügewort buton ðæt kommt nur einmal vor, und zwar mit dem Konjunktiv: Cp. 98, 15 ne untreowsige ge no eow betweoxn, buton huru ðæt ge eow gehæbben sume hwile, ærðæmþe ge eowru gebedu & eowra offrunga don willen, & eft sona cirrað to eowrum ryhthæmde (= nolite fraudare invicem, nisi forte ex consensu ad tempus, ut vacetis orationi: et iterum ne tentet vos Satanas, revertimini in idipsum). Vgl. aber auch § 455.

451. 3. ðær.

Auch dieses Fügewort kommt nur mit dem Konjunktiv vor: Be. 474, 21 geþafedon hi ðære arednesse & him wif sealdon, þæt ðær seo wise on tweon cyme, þæt hi ðonne ma of ðam wifcynne him cyning curan ðonne of ðam wæpnedcynne (= ea solum conditione dare consenserunt, ut ubi res perveniret in dubium, magis de feminea Regum prosapia, quam de masculina Regem sibi eligerent). […]

452. 4. nemne, nymðe.

Diese beiden Fügewörter erscheinen nur im Beda, und zwar nur mit dem Konjunktiv: Be. 483, 37 cyþdon him openlice & sædon, nemne hi him maran andlyfne sealdon, þæt hi woldan him sylfe niman (= nisi . . . . daretur); […]

5. Einzelheiten.

a. Andere Fügewörter.

453. α. ono nu, ono gif kommen nur im Beda vor (vgl. Miller, S. XXIX ff., Mather, S. 49): Be. 494, 19 ono nu þæt wif wel gedyrstgade, forhwon ne sceal . . . (= si . . . . præsumsit); […]

454. β. nu: Be. 494, 7 and nu þæt wif on blodes flownysse geseted herigendlice mihte Drihtnes hrægele gehrinan, forhwon ðonne . . . (= si . . . potuit); […]

455. γ. „ausgenommen daſs“ wird ausgedrückt durch nemne und buton ðæt: Be. 535, 22 ða wæs geworden þæt ðære sylfan nihte ða brohton ban ute awunedon, & eac swylce nemne mon teld ðær ofer abrædde (= unde factum est ut ipsa nocte reliquiæ adlatæ foris permanerent, tentorio tantum majore supra carrum in quo inerant extenso; bei Miller fehlt & eac swylce, er übersetzt: so it was, that the bones when brought remained outside that night, only that an awning was spread over them). […]

456. δ. ðonne; naturgemäß haben solche Sätze mit ðonne stets eine zeitliche Färbung, und es ist schwer, eine feste Grenze zu ziehen gegen die rein zeitlichen Sätze mit diesem Fügeworte: Cp. 160, 16 ða halgan lareowas ðonne him nimað tiglan, ðonne he þara eorðlicra monna heortan underfoð to lærenne; […]

457. ε. Auch andere Fügewörter, die sonst nur in anderer Weise verwendet werden, kann man an einigen Stellen als bedingend auffassen: Be. 484, 6 ecne ðeowdom geheton, wiþþon ðe him mon andlyfne forgeaf (Miller: forgefe; = pro accipiendis alimentorum subsidiis æternum subituri servitium); […]

458. b. Wechsel von Indikativ und Konjunktiv.

Be. 569, 8 sæde he, gif he æt leornunge sæt (Miller: sæte), oþþe elles hwæt dyde, gif semninga mare blæd windes astahg, þæt he sona instæpe Drihtnes mildheortnysse gecygde & ða mildse bæd monna cynne (vgl. Mather, a. a. O. S. 45 ff.). […]

Anmerkung: Ohne Fügewörter kommen Bedingungssätze nur ganz vereinzelt vor: Bo. 212, 1 gif hit swa nære, ðonne nære he þæt þæt he gehaten is, oþþe — ænig þing ær wære oþþe æltæwre, ðonne wære þæt betere ðonne he; […]

H. Nebensätze zur Angabe einer Einräumung.

Fügewörter in diesen Sätzen sind: ðeahðe, swa . . . swa, sam . . . . sam, einmal swa þeh þe (Or. 136, 18). — Vgl. aber auch § 420, S. 69.

459. 1. Mit dem Indikativ: Es ist gar kein Zweifel möglich, daſs wirklich in einräumenden Sätzen der Indikativ vorkommt, ich stimme darin vollständig mit Prollius (a. a. O., S. 22 ff.) überein; vgl. auch Nader (Anglia XI. S. 452, § 60). — Be. 482, 2 ðeah ðe hi ðas ðing sædon, ne mihton hi nænigne fultum æt him begitan (= neque hæc tamen agentes quicquam ab illo auxilii impetrare quiverunt); […]

460. 2. Mit dem Konjunktiv: Be. 478, 41 be ðam ðonne cuþ is, ðeah ðe he mid wætere fulluhtes bæþes aþwegen ne wære, þæt he wæs hwæþere mid ðy bæþe his blodes geclænsad; […]

Anmerkung: Je einmal werden die Fügewörter gif und hwæðer zur Einleitung von einräumenden Nebensätzen verwandt: Cp. 336, 20 gif we nauht ðæs ne doð þe us mon mid gode leanian ðurfe, ne do we eac nan woh þe us mon fore tælan ðurfe (= et si digna misericordiæ retributione non agimus, nulla tamen perversa perpetramus; vgl. Mather, a. a. O., S. 21 u.). […]

I. Folgesätze.

Fügewörter in den Folgesätzen sind: þæt, swa þæt, swa . . . þæt, swelc . . . þæt, to ðæs . . . þæt, to ðon . . . þæt, to ðæm . . . þæt.

461. 1. Mit dem Indikativ: Be. 473, 30 leohte nihte on sumera hafaþ, swa þæt oft on middre nihte geflit cymeþ ðam behealdendum, hwæþer hit si ðe æfen glommung ðe on morgen deagung; […]

462. 2. Mit dem Konjunktiv: Be. 478, 9 & hi swa on ðæs streames brycge abysgade wæron, þæt hi hwene ær æfenne oferfaran ne mihton; […]

Anmerkung: An einer Stelle scheint þe einen Folgesatz einzuleiten: So. 163, 5 ne com ic naþer mid anre byrðene ham, þe me ne lyste ealne þane wude ham brengan, gif ic hyne ealne aberan meihte.
